Welcome to the Department of Physics

The Department of Physics offers bachelor's and master's study programs in physics, geophysics, meteorology and climate physics, and for the education of physics teachers. Research at the department can be divided into five major topics: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Quantum Materials and Systems, Optics and Photonics, Geophysics, Meteorology and Climate Physics.

Physiker*innen im Beruf
Wer kennt es nicht? Man studiert friedlich vor sich hin, plant von Unifest zu Eulenfest - und wird plötzlich schon wieder gefragt, was man denn nach dem Studium beruflich machen will... Und hat natürlich mal wieder gar keinen Plan. Damit es Euch in Zukunft nicht mehr so geht, haben wir für euch die Veranstaltung "Physiker*innen im Beruf" organisiert! Dort präsentieren Euch bereits arbeitende Physiker*innen aus der Industrie in kurzen Paneltalks Ihren Beruf und Ihr Unternehmen. Anschließend habt Ihr die Möglichkeit, Euch die Stände der Firmen anzuschauen und Euch dort in ungezwungener Atmosphäre mit den Physiker*innen auszutauschen. Vertreten sind Unternehmen aus den Bereichen Software-Engineering, Wissenschaftskommunikation, Unternehmensberatung, Medizinphysik und vielen mehr!

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Husemann is an elected member of the Executive Committee of the European Physical Society, EPS, for two years. The EPS promotes scientific exchange and represents around 100,000 physicists in Europe.

Upper limit for neutrino mass

The international KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has once again set new standards: An upper limit of 0.45 electron volt/c^2 (equivalent to 8 x 10^(-37) kilograms) for the mass of the neutrino can be derived from the current data.
