Welcome to the Department of Physics
The Department of Physics offers bachelor's and master's study programs in physics, geophysics, meteorology and climate physics, and for the education of physics teachers. Research at the department can be divided into five major topics: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Quantum Materials and Systems, Optics and Photonics, Geophysics, Meteorology and Climate Physics.

Otto Lehmann researched liquid crystals at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, from which KIT emerged, and thus laid the foundation for modern displays.

The international KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has once again set new standards: An upper limit of 0.45 electron volt/c^2 (equivalent to 8 x 10^(-37) kilograms) for the mass of the neutrino can be derived from the current data.
